september in the garden With the days becoming shorter and nights longer and cooler, this is the time to enjoy the last throes of flowering from late perennials such as asters and sedums. Many of the wonderful autumn flowers belong to the daisy family, their simple shapes and strong colours adding interest to any garden at this time of year.
When combined with structural grasses the effect can be truly magical on a misty morning. |

| Late September is the perfect time to turn your attention to your lawn. Renovate established lawns by scarifing vigorously to remove debris (known as thatch) and spike to allow air into the soil and allow surface water to drain away.
We use a proprietary autumn fertiliser to encourage strong roots which is beneficial for the winter conditions ahead, and mowing can be reduced when the lawn starts to grow at a slower rate. |

If you are giving your garden a makeover this autumn, and wish to lay a new lawn or replace a tired old patch of grass, our online tutorial will show you how its done - Click Here Before autumn truly sets in, roses still need to be sprayed against mildew and hedges neatly clipped. Planting at this time of year will allow perennials and shrubs to settle in before the harsh winter weather, and they will get to off to a good start next spring.
The soil is still warm after the summer, (even though the last month has been dissapointingly on the cool side!) and the increasing humidity are perfect for plants to just put on a little growth before the first frosts.
Have a lovely September,
Linette Applegate - Head Gardener at Toddington Manor.
