One of the most versatile and useful herbs, this strongly aromatic evergreen shrub originates from the Mediterranean, so prefers full sun, and light, well drained soil.
It will grow well in a container, and the leaves can be picked all year round, so place it near the kitchen door!

Rosmarinus officinalis is Common Rosemary, with small pale blue flowers in early spring until early summer, with green needle shaped leaves, and growing to a height of 1m and a spread of 1m.
Several different cultivars are available, such as R.o. 'Roseus', with pretty pale pink flowers, R.o. 'Aureus', has green leaves splashed with gold, and R.o. 'Miss Jessopp's Upright', a vigorous erect variety suitable for hedging.
Widely available from most nurseries, rosemary is included in the Herb garden at Toddington Manor, Bedfordshire.
