Rosa rugosa

rosa rugosa

Roses - you either love them or hate them. Myself, I love the flowers, but hate the bugs and diseases that some modern cultivars attract. But for a low maintenance solution choose the rugosa cultivars.

The all make dense rounded shrubs with dark, wrinkled leaves under which few weeds will survive, with flowers ranging from white, shell pink and rich burgundy. Most will repeatedly flower during summer, and bear hips in the autumn.

They will tolerate many situations, from sand through to clay soil, and do not mind light shade, although they will flower better in a sunny position.

rosa rugosa ...
They require no pruning and they have amazing disease resistance, so need I say more!
A few cultivars I would recommend are the following;

'Agnes', with full, double, old-fashioned flowers - the only rugosa with delicate yellow flowers. Height 8ft spread 5ft.

'Roseraie de L'Hay' fresh apple-green foliage and double, scented rich crimson-purple flowers. Height and spread 7ft.

'Frau Dagmar Hastrup' Delicate single flesh-pink flowers with hips appearing alongside later flowers. Height and spread 5ft
