polygonatum x hybridumAlthough not particularly showy plants, these herbaceous perennials have a certain elegance and will certainly grow in the most awkward spots, where shade and lack of moisture feature. |

| Solomon' Seal, which is its common name, flowers in May and clusters of tubular white flowers hang along the stems.
These horizontal stems dripping with flowers give the plant its subdued gracefulness. The leaves are a grey-green during spring and summer and turn a buttery yellow in autumn. |

The plant will grow to 1.2m (4ft) high, and eventually spread to around 1m (3ft).
The only drawback of growing this plant is a pest, the Solomon seal sawfly, otherwise known as Phymatocera aterrima, which feed on the leaves during early summer.
If your plant develops holes in the leaves, look on the underside, and if you find blue-grey caterpillars with black heads, about 20mm long, you will need to either pick off the larvae and dispose of, or spray with a contact insecticide.
