It can be used to good effect in a late summer border when combined with helenium's, aster's or echinacea's. As they grow so tall, they can be used as a living screen, and add movement to the garden.
This is a perennial grass, with tight clumps of vertical foliage reaching up to 3m if happy with the conditions. The leaves have a thin silvery stripe along the middle of its leaves, and the flowers start to appear in September.

These emerge as arching pink plumes, turning to silvery-white. The flower and seed heads can provide many months of interest over autumn and winter, until they are cut down in spring when the new shoots appear at ground level.
Its German name is translated as Silver Feather, which aptly describes its graceful flowers. It is happiest when grown in rich, moisture retentive loam, but will adapt to drier borders, but may grow a little shorter. Again, they flower at their best in full sun, but will cope with a little shade.
