landscapers and planting

If your landscaper will be carrying out the planting, it is important to confirm with your contractor who will be planting your garden, and their qualifications or experience to do this job.

Many landscape companies comprise of workers with a building industry background, which is perfectly reasonable to assume. The same skills used In house building are used on the construction of the hard landscaping in your garden.

However, to prepare the site professionally and carry out the planting requires a different set of skills to those used in the building trade.
Many landscape companies comprise of workers with a building background, which is perfectly reasonable...

This is a very important distinction to make, and one that is often overlooked. Handling delicate plants, bare-root specimens or tree's, laying turf correctly and preparing beds properly, introducing organic matter and fertilizer are as important as the quality of the paving or retaining walls.

After all, a garden is only as good as the planting within it...

Plants are under enormous stress when they are transferred from pots to the ground, and every effort must be made to ensure they survive the coming months and establish themselves in your garden. An understanding of how to minimise these stresses are needed to ensure the best start possible.

poorly planted specimens may not survive

Poorly planted specimens may not survive this important period after planting, and could prove costly to replace, especially if you realise they are not establishing themselves after your soft landscaping guarantee period has expired!

After all, the plants may take up a third of your total budget, and even though they may look fine on the day of planting, if the beds have not been suitably prepared, or the plants have not been watered sufficiently before they were planted, you may have wasted a lot of money.

A good landscaper will have someone dedicated to overseeing the planting phase of their garden projects, with the relevant qualifications and experience to match.

You must satisfy yourself they are competent to carry out this work. If not it may prove worthwhile contacting a reputable local garden maintenance or garden services company to quote for the soft landscaping phase, leaving your original landscaper to carry out the hard landscaping only.
