your gardens climate

Your garden's climate can affect your plant's success, so Homebase plants have care cards with simple icons showing you which conditions each plant thrives in, so you can match these to your conditions.

Soil type

Your soil type can affect the success of your plants, so Homebase plants are suitable for one of 2 types.

Find out which type you have by taking a piece of soil the size of a golf ball (removing any stones) and roll into a 'worm' shape...

Soil type

1. Well drained

Well drained soil types will not form this worm shape, they simply fall apart
in your hand, and could be described as sandy in appearance.

1. Well drained

2. Moist, but well drained

Moist, but well drained soil types will form this shape, but will be crushed easily in the palm of your hand, with a loam appearance.

2. Moist, but well drained

"Most gardens have the same soil throughout, but larger gardens may have different soil types in different areas. Check the soil in several places, and if different source plants to suit each soil type."

Sunlight conditions

Your sunlight conditions can also affect the success of your new plants, so all planting available in Homebase is suitable for one of 4 sunlight conditions.

To select plants for the correct sunlight conditions in your border...

Sunlight conditions

1. Full Sun

For borders in your garden that normally receive Full sun light for the
majority of the day - this is usually true for south-facing situations.

1. Full Sun

2. Full Sun and Partial Shade

Full sun and Partial shade borders get full sunlight for half the day or
dappled sunlight all day - usually true for east/west facing situations.

2. Full Sun and Partial Shade

3. Partial Shade

Garden borders with Partial shade conditions would normally receive
dappled sunlight all of the day.

3. Partial Shade

4. Full Shade

For borders that are normally in Full shade, receiving little sunlight for the majority of the day. This is usually true for north-facing situations.

4. Full Shade

"Many borders have different sunlight levels depending on where they are in the garden. If your borders have different sunlight levels, source plants to suit that location, so each plant matches it's locations sunlight level."
