clematis alpina 'ruby' When most people think of clematis, I am sure the majority think of those big, blowsy and bright flowers in late summer, but there are enough varieties of clematis to flower nearly all year round. |
|
| One of my favourites is the alpina species - a delicate climber with fresh light green leaves and gently nodding flowers.
Reaching a height of 2.5m (8 ft) it is not as rampant as summer flowering plants, and will also cope well with light shade, so is suitable for growing through trees and on east or west walls. |
|
Hardy to -10°C, it prefers well-drained soil in partial shade.
The variety 'Ruby' has soft red flowers, with cream petal-like stamens inside. They hang gracefully all over the plant during mid to late spring, and are followed by attractive, fluffy seed-heads.
