Selecting the plants for your garden at Homebase

The Plant Labels help you choose your plants.

You can see if each plant is suitable for your Soil and Sunlight, along with more information to assist with laying out your borders.

Selecting the plants for your garden at Homebase

The Soil Type Icons...

Your soil type can affect the success of your plants, so Homebase plants are suitable for one of 2 types. Find out which type you have by taking a piece of soil the size of a golf ball (removing any stones) and roll into a 'worm' shape...

1. Well drained

Well drained soil types will not form this worm shape, they simply fall apart
in your hand, and could be described as sandy in appearance.

1. Well drained

2. Moist, but well drained

Moist, but well drained soil types will form this shape, but will be crushed easily in the palm of your hand, with a loam appearance.

2. Moist, but well drained

The Sunlight Icons...

Your sunlight conditions can also affect the success of your new plants, so all planting available in Homebase is suitable for one of 4 sunlight conditions. To select plants for the correct sunlight conditions in your border...

1. Full Sun

For borders in your garden that normally receive Full sun light for the
majority of the day - this is usually true for south-facing situations.

1. Full Sun

2. Full Sun and Partial Shade

Full sun and Partial shade borders get full sunlight for half the day or
dappled sunlight all day - usually true for east/west facing situations.

2. Full Sun and Partial Shade

3. Partial Shade

Garden borders with Partial shade conditions would normally receive
dappled sunlight all of the day.

3. Partial Shade

4. Full Shade

For borders that are normally in Full shade, receiving little sunlight for the majority of the day. This is usually true for north-facing situations.

4. Full Shade

More Icons to help you layout your plants...

Try to stick to your own gardens Soil and Sunlight conditions and your chosen design style by matching the plant label’s Icons. You can also choose your plants based on;

the Homebase plant label icons

Try to cover a range of Flowering Times and Berrying Times for year round colour, and don’t forget Scent. Well Watered plants are great for damp areas, or look out for the drought tolerant Water Wise plants if you have regular hosepipe bans!
