It is a small, well-behaved tree, quite slow growing but eventually reaching 15m in height, and 7.5m wide. The small, oval toothed leaves are dark green, before taking on the autumnal hues and dropping.
It is quite tolerant of most soils; it does need some moisture, but dislikes waterlogged conditions, and is happiest in full sun, but tolerates partial shade.
Betula utilis var. jacquemontii can be used as a single specimen tree, or a group looks lovely planted at the end of a garden. Several different selections are also available, including 'Silver Shadow', 'Inverleith', 'Jermyn's', 'Doorenbos' and 'Grayswood Ghost'.
